Ladder Safety – Five Safety Steps You Should Always Follow

Ladders for long reaches range from straight wooden ladders to aluminum extension ladders. One that extends to 20 feet is sufficient for most homes. Be sure your ladder is strong, yet light enough for you to handle easily. Below are some ladder safety tips.

  1. Inspect your ladder for cracks and other weakness before using the ladder.
  2. Place the base of the ladder on firm, level ground.
  3. Step on and off the ladder by placing your feet on to the center of the rung (ladder steps). Use both hands to grip the ladder’s rails and not the rungs. If will need to reposition the ladder if it wobbles.
  4. Keep your hips between the ladder rails. Don’t lean out to reach something out of reach form the ladder, instead reposition the ladder.
  5. To position a ladder:

Set the ladder at the base of the wall.

Walk the ladder into an upright position to the wall.

Move the ladder base outward. Set the base at a distance from the wall that is equal to one-quarter of the ladder’s length.
